S&ME is looking for a motivated and passionate part-time Historian - Architectural Historian

As a Historian - Architectural Historian, your pivotal role lies in safeguarding and interpreting the historical essence of architectural marvels. Your wealth of knowledge will enrich our projects, seamlessly weaving historical insights into our endeavors while ensuring alignment with regulations. Through your expertise, we'll cultivate a profound reverence for the cultural and historical tapestry of our built landscape.


Your Day-to-Day:

  • Research: Assist with historical research in local, state, and regional libraries, archives, and government offices.
  • Historic Resource Surveys and Assessments: Fieldwork for historic resource surveys may include site visits, fieldwork, site plan sketches, and related duties. Recording activities may include conducting historic and archival research, developing historic and/or architectural contexts, and making National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluations.
  • Forms and Documentation: Assist with the preparation of historic property inventory forms, including statements of significance and architectural descriptions. Documenting historic properties potentially impacted by state or federal undertakings.

What You Bring:

  • A Bachelor's degree in history, historic preservation, architectural history, or a closely related field and meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for history or architectural history.
  • A minimum of 3 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience in historical research and writing, including being able to present clear, precise, analytical, and authoritative arguments. S&ME may request a writing sample from qualified candidates.
  • The knowledge of American architectural styles and have an understanding of the NRHP criteria and how to apply them to historic resources.
  • Proficiency in conducting architectural field surveys, completing state site forms, and utilizing ArcGIS or similar geographic information system software.
  • Knowledge, interest, and/or experience with environmental and cultural resources compliance (National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act (Section 106)).
  • Willingness to travel out of town, including overnight, for project work as necessary.
