Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
The department of Earth, Marine and Environmental Sciences (EMES) resulted from the merger of the departments of Marine Sciences, Geological Sciences, and the Institute of Marine Sciences. This consolidation represents an opportunity to build a nationally prominent earth and marine sciences department and coastal marine lab. The natural synergy of the earth and ocean sciences at Carolina brings strength, stability, and visibility to the combined program. UNC-Chapel Hill is taking advantage of the natural connections between these programs and the combined strengths of faculty, students and staff to increase multidisciplinary and emerging research, develop degree programs to better serve students, and enhance engagement with North Carolina coastal communities. Position Summary
This Research Technician position supports UNC's long term water quality monitoring (Neuse River, Pamlico Sound, FerryMon) and related laboratory and analytical activities. The technician's primary responsibility will be conducting field work, both in North Carolina and other US locations, and to operate and maintain lab equipment which includes, but is not limited to, an HPLC, fluorometer, TOC, POC/PON and nutrient analyzers. The technician will perform minor repairs and operate equipment with limited supervision. The technician will also maintain inventory of equipment and related research materials. Data analysis and application of simple statistics will be conducted as part of this position. The technician will also conduct experiments and filter environmental water samples. The technician should have working knowledge of Excel, Word and PowerPoint and follow laboratory safety, policies and procedures which are vital to this position. Responsibilities also include maintaining accurate records for the field and lab and preparing and submitting analysis invoices for the UNC-CH Environmental Microbiology Recharge Center. The technician will contribute to publications, reports and presentations. Possibility of this temporary position to become a permanent position after probationary period.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
The technician should be organized, efficient, self-motivated and have good written and oral communication skills. Ability to work both independently and with others is required. Working knowledge of the scientific method and applications. Follows laboratory safety, policies and procedures and has working knowledge of Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Bachelor's degree in Marine or environmental sciences or related natural science degree or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Previous experience in water quality filtration and data analysis is preferred. Ability to trailer and drive a boat. Experience with R, Matlab or other statistical software. Ability to process high volume of samples and excellent math skills are a plus.
