Responsibilities and Expectations:

We are looking for a dedicated Machine Operator to join our team. As a Machine Operator for IPS, you will identify problems and make necessary adjustments as they relate to the industry. Set and operate different machines within the manufacturing plant.

  • Produce parts and tools from sheet metal using punch press and other machines.
  • Observe machine operation to detect workpiece defects or machine malfunctions, adjusting machines as necessary
  • Inspect workpieces for defects, and measure workpieces to determine accuracy of machine operation, using rules, templates, or other measuring instruments
  • Read blueprints to determine product specifications and tooling instructions and to plan operational sequences
  • Conduct a first-piece inspection of sheet metal material to meet production standards using a Caliper
  • Properly identify/sort and label parts according to the Program Nest
  • Select, install, and adjust the alignment of punch dies, cutters, dies, guides, and holding devices, using templates, measuring instruments, and handtools
  • Position, adjust, and secure stock material or workpieces against stops, on arbors, or in chucks, fixtures, or automatic feeding mechanisms, manually or using hoists/forklift or pallet jack
  • Perform minor machine maintenance, such as oiling or cleaning machines, dies, or workpieces, or adding lubricates/oil to machine reservoirs
  • Instruct other workers in machine set-up and operation
  • Make minor electrical and mechanical repairs and adjustments to machines and notify supervisors when major service is required
  • Record operational data, such as program run time, changeovers, material usage and machine speed
  • Remove burrs, sharp edges, rust, or scale from workpieces, using files, hand grinders, wire brushes, or power tools
  • Set up sheer machine according to product specification
  • Report maintenance requirements and/or safety violations to the Supervisor/Leadman
  • Operate forklift and hoists safely
  • Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits
  • Cross-train in other departments within manufacturing production
  • May be expected to assist in other manufacturing production areas
  • Maintain quality and on time delivery metrics
  • Ensure safety training and certifications are completed timely
  • Adhere to all company policies
  • Observe all safety procedures and policies and use proper protective equipment (especially eye, ear protection and steel toe shoes/boots, gloves, etc.)
  • Keep work area clean and organized
  • Report all injuries, near misses and accidents immediately to a supervisor
  • All other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Competencies:

  • Mechanical skills and prior experience working with brake press, punch press and other machines
  • Knowledge of machines and tools, including uses, repair and maintenance
  • Knowledge of raw materials and production processes and other techniques for maximizing the effective manufacture of products
  • Use logic and reasoning to identify alternative approach to problems that arise during shift
  • Ability to work with unit teams in various levels
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to speak clearly and persuasively in positive or negative situations; Listens and gets clarification; Responds well to questions; Participates in meetings.
  • Ability to read a limited number of two and three syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two step instructions
