Director of Benefits (Hybrid) Charleston, South Carolina

The Director of Benefits collaborates with external partners and the Sonepar USA Benefit & Investment/Oversight Committees to plan and direct the overall strategy, design, implementation, communication and compliance of Sonepar USA's health and welfare, wellness, and retirement benefit programs as well as supports Executive Compensation programs as needed.

What you will do:

  • Sets Direction: Plans and directs overall benefits program design, implementation, communication, and operations to include health and welfare, well-being, and retirement benefits. Guides, organizes, and leverages designated benefit and investment committee efforts to shape future strategic direction. Contributes to the evolving total rewards program strategic framework including assistance with the defining, positioning, and communication of key elements.
  • Drives Effectiveness: Leads development, implementation, and operations of benefit programs. Directs development of communication strategies to drive engagement and adoption; provides multi-channel tools to candidates, new hires, and existing associates via annual open enrollment and targeted interventions. Oversees and ensures effective and timely preparation of all materials for the benefits and investment committee in partnership with and/or support of others designated members. Drives overarching philosophy of wellness programs, to include mental and financial health initiatives in partnership with other internal teams (i.e., Sonepar Cares, Employee Resource Groups). Partners with team leadership and advisors, as needed, to understand and ensure plans are compliant with regulatory and legislative requirements to include final approval of 5500s, Summary Plan Documents, annual associate notices, etc.
  • Monitors Ongoing Evaluation: Ensures effective consideration of multiple perspectives to shape program and plan design, namely the employer and associate perspective as well as cost and competitiveness. Monitors external trends and regulations ongoing to ensure compliance, proactively identifies gaps and challenges. Oversees and monitors plan performance and suggests appropriate interventions and actions to drive engagement, value, and adoption. Primary Benefit due diligence and implementation strategy for Mergers & Acquisitions Supports compensation as needed.
  • People & Partner Management: Direct and motivate a high-performing team responsible for the management and delivery of total rewards programs. Effectively establishes, oversees, and monitors various external partner/vendor relationships. Enables HR Operations to successfully address associate inquiries.

What you bring:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, business, or related field required
  • A minimum of 7+ years of progressive experience in leading and managing Total Rewards, including compensation, benefits, and recognition programs, with a proven track record of success in a leadership role.
  • Strong knowledge of compensation and benefits regulations, tax implications, and industry best practices. High level of integrity and ethics in managing sensitive compensation and benefits data.
  • Experience with Managing self-funded ERISA plans 10+ years Required
  • Experiencing designing and implementing Executive Compensation Plans


Licenses and Certifications:

  • SPHR/PHR Preferred and
  • CEBS/CBP/WLCP Preferred and
  • CCP Preferred


Travel Requirements: ~ 10%
