CEI Roadway Inspector

S&ME is seeking an individual to join our Transportation team in Columbia, South Carolina as a CEI Roadway Inspector and help us provide engineering solutions to our clients.


What You Will Do:

As a CEI Roadway Inspector, you will work under the supervision of higher-level technical and professional staff. You will perform technical duties associated with the oversight, administration, and inspection of transportation projects, including roadway, bridge, rail, pedestrian, port, and /or aviation, to determine the contractor's compliance with the contract, plans, and specifications. You will observe and inspect various contractors' operations including clearing and grubbing, earthmoving, paving, concrete pavement, bridge construction, pipe installation, traffic control, pavement marking, etc.

  • Prepare material reports, daily diaries, and field books for contractor payment documentation
  • Perform a variety of calculations, computations, and documentation associated with the project inspection and material testing
  • Inspect erosion control devices for plan and permit compliance
  • Verify line and grade with survey equipment
  • Attend meetings and interact with third-party construction personnel
  • Perform DBE and EEO compliance surveys.

CEI Inspectors are subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions and to various types of weather and field conditions, including heights, uneven terrain, highway traffic, hazards of highway construction sites, and heavy equipment, and may travel/work extended hours, weekends, and/or holidays.


Pay rate is based on the level of experience. Additional incentives are available for existing applicable certifications.


Who You Are:

  • You have a High school diploma/GED
  • You have 2 or more years of highway-related construction or inspection experience or a 2-year technical degree in Civil Engineering Technology or Surveying Technology or higher with 2+ years of highway-related construction or experience
  • You have the ability to supervise crew and/or a separate program function of moderate complexity
  • You have one or more SCDOT-based certifications
  • You have experience with SCDOT resurfacing projects including pavement markings, a plus
  • You have American Concrete Institute (ACI) Certification, or other materials certifications, a plus

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment such as:

  • Working outdoors the majority of the time in varying weather conditions
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs, (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Maneuver field equipment safely, such as a loaded wheelbarrow, on uneven ground and around active construction sites
  • Traveling out-of-town (typically overnight) for assignments as necessary
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
