What You'll Do:

Provides timely, non-judgmental, compassionate care to the pediatric sexual assault victim. The SANE (sexual assault nurse examiner) exam may include a medical-forensic exam, prophylaxis for pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections, photographic documentation, and referrals for appropriate medical and psychological follow-up, support and participation in legal proceedings.

How You'll Do It:

  • Perform and document sexual assault medical forensic interviews/exams accurately and timely.
  • Perform a complete medical forensic evaluation to include: head-to-toe medical assessment for trauma, detailed genital/anal examination, forensic specimen collection and supportive documentation, photo documentation of bodily and genital-anal injuries with competent documentation, and ensure mandatory reporting per Wisconsin State Guidelines.
  • Maintain chain of custody and adhere to evidence guidelines.
  • Ensure patient/medial record confidentiality at all times (HIPPA).
  • Maintain professional standards that do not create conflict of interests with employment or patient care.
  • Administer prophylactic medications and emergency contraception.
  • Coordinate referrals for appropriate follow-up care as needed.
  • Testify as fact witness to any/all cases performed.
  • Participate in periodic case review to include documentation and photographs
  • Participate in 48 hours minimum coverage of on-call per month, to include shared holiday coverage. Must respond via phone call within 10 minutes and arrive within 60 minutes of being contacted by the ED while on call.
  • Participate in community awareness and outreach projects as needed and directed by CAPS (Child Advocacy Protection Services).
  • Review of medical chart, documentation, and photographs by CAPS.
  • Participate in one on one feedback sessions with CAPS team member for all involvement in SANE cases.

Requirements:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with an ADN or a BSN in order to meet the recommended entry level for a professional nurse (or equivalent academic and/or professional experience). A BSN is preferred.
  • A current license to practice professional nursing in the State of Wisconsin.
  • Minimum of two years of nursing experience. Specialty experience in women's health, emergency department or intensive care preferred.
  • Current CPR certification -Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers through American Heart or American Red Cross is required.
  • Completion of the Wisconsin SANE-A and SANE-P didactic training, within 3 months of hire, or as training allows.

Maintain SANE credentials

  • Attend minimum of 80 percent of all SANE staff meetings and/or participate in multi-disciplinary team meetings.
  • Maintain clinical education hours relevant to sexual assault, forensics, or pediatric subspecialty (minimum required hours 12 per calendar year)
  • Membership in professional organizations, such as the International Association of Forensic Nurses and American College of Forensic Examiners strongly recommended
  • Attend a minimum of 2 court proceedings per calendar year deemed "significant for observation" by the SANE Clinical Coordinator/Program Director

Schedule Details: Minimum schedule requirement of 48 hours of call per month with one weekend call shift per month and one holiday call shift per year.
