Historian-Architectural Historian

S&ME is seeking a talented and experienced part-time Historian - Architectural Historian to join our team in Charleston, South Carolina.


What You Will Do:

As a Historian - Architectural Historian, you will play a crucial role in preserving and interpreting the historical significance of architectural structures. Your expertise will contribute to the successful integration of historical considerations into our projects, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and fostering a deep appreciation for the cultural and historical aspects of the built environment.

  • Assist with historical research in local, state, and regional libraries, archives, and government offices.
  • Assist with historic resource surveys and assessments. Fieldwork for historic resource surveys may include site visits, fieldwork, site plan sketches, and related duties. Recording activities may include conducting historic and archival research, developing historic and/or architectural contexts, and making National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) evaluations.
  • Assist with the preparation of historic property inventory forms, including statements of significance and architectural descriptions.
  • Documenting historic properties potentially impacted by state or federal undertakings.

Who You Are:

  • You have a Bachelor's degree in history, historic preservation, architectural history, or a closely related field and meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for history or architectural history OR a Master's degree.
  • You are skilled in historical research and writing, including being able to present clear, precise, analytical, and authoritative arguments. S&ME may request a writing sample from qualified candidates.
  • You know American architectural styles and have an understanding of the NRHP criteria and how to apply them to historic resources.
  • You are willing to travel out of town, including overnight, for project work as necessary.
  • You are proficient in conducting architectural field surveys, completing state site forms, and utilizing ArcGIS or similar geographic information system software.
  • You have knowledge, interest, and/or experience with environmental and cultural resources compliance (National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), National Historic Preservation Act (Section 106)).

This is a part-time position with competitive pay based on experience. The successful candidate must meet the requirements of the company's Fleet Management Program, Substance Policy, and Reference Check Program.
