HDR is looking for a Senior Transit Engineer to join our South Atlantic Area Transportation Business Group. This individual will be expected to manage and support the design and/or planning of public transportation projects. They will lead and support multi-disciplinary transit projects that may include Bus, Bus Rapid Transit, Streetcar, or Transit Support Facilities. Primary responsibilities will include project management and design oversight of transit service, vehicle and transit maintenance facilities, transit stations and centers, and bus terminals. They must have a strong foundation in the transit industry, knowledge of client programs and experience managing multi-disciplinary project deliverables. This role may be based out of any HDR office in North or South Carolina. In this role, we'll count on you to:

  • Lead teams on a variety of transportation planning projects
  • Assist clients in the day-to-day project management activities of design, funding, construction and project control related to bus rapid transit projects
  • Be responsible for general project administration including Document Controls, Procurement, DBE/ADA Civil Rights, Project Controls and Risk Management
  • Develop work scopes and negotiate additional services contracts and contract changes for clients; coordinates and supervises consultants' engineering design activities
  • Manage engineering and architectural activities related to the design and construction or modification of transit facilities, including bus rapid transit, transit centers, maintenance facilities, park & rides, electric bus infrastructure, and bus stop amenities
  • Communicate and implements safety rules, policies, and procedures in support of the agency's safety vision and goals
  • Plan, organize, and manage capital project scopes, schedules, and budgets
  • Coordinate with governmental and private agencies (stakeholders, cities, counties, DOT, utility companies, etc.) in the design and construction of transit projects
  • Provide updates to design criteria manuals, standard project specifications, and standard details for transit capital projects
  • Work closely with procurement personnel to bid, award and manage contracts and subcontracts
  • Work closely with grants department and other stakeholders to ensure compliance and success including audits
  • Take responsibility for the entire design process from the proposal through preparation of plans, specifications and estimates of moderate to large transit projects
  • Participate in reviews and concept/design meetings with various clients and architects
  • Conduct work sessions for design development
  • Conduct design development and contract document work sessions at a project site in conjunction with Project Managers and other disciplines
  • Review documents for areas of conflict with all disciplines
  • Assist in leading a team of designers in technical designs and efficient solutions
  • Write/edit structural specifications, select procedures, materials and their respective sizes, and complete necessary calculations
  • Independently coordinate the work of the site and structural design teams through the design development and contract document phases of a project
  • Establish meetings and participate in reviews with various groups for code and agency compliance
  • Coordinate workload through design development and construction document phases to complete the documents on schedule and within budget
  • Independently coordinate the work of professional staff and balance the team throughout the entire project's development
  • Track the financial aspects of projects, and coordinate/adjust the work efforts with teams to ensure that work is completed within the parameters of the agreed-upon schedule
  • Select, coordinate, and layout various aspects of design (vehicle maintenance equipment, site flow, etc.)
  • Attend client meetings and must have the ability to present a design approach for technical discussion
  • Implement QA/QC procedures
  • Perform other design/engineering tasks as assigned

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related field
  • A minimum of 10 years combined experience in traffic, TSP, transit, and roadway engineering
  • PE license
  • Traffic and transit signal priority (TSP) experience in order to work with department of transportations on behalf of project and its needs
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture is a must
  • Experience in cost control, scheduling and risk management
  • Competence in Microsoft Word, Excel and Project
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with ability to effectively work on multiple projects simultaneously
  • Civil engineering, architectural design and systems design and construction
  • Project budgets, estimating and related documents
  • Local, regional, state, and federal agencies, groups and organizations involved in transit planning and development
  • National, State and Local Laws, codes, regulations, and legal requirements related to public transportation
  • Americans with Disabilities Act Accessible Guidelines

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum of 6 years of increasingly responsible experience in managing capital projects, including bus rapid transit and other transit facilities
  • Minimum of 5 years in the transit industry managing design and construction projects
  • Computer skills using Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, MicroStation
  • Experience with designing transit facilities such as bus rapid transit, transit stations, parks and rides, transit centers, and operations and maintenance facilities
  • Experience with state departments of transportation and the federal transit administration
  • Demonstrated experience with SCDOT projects is a plus
  • PMP designation
  • Local candidates are preferred
