Description of Work | The Carolina Population Center (CPC) at UNC-Chapel Hill invites applications from undergraduate students from underrepresented groups and/or those with a demonstrated commitment to diversity with interests in the population, health, and spatial sciences for research internships during Summer 2018. An underrepresented group is defined as 1) Individuals with disabilities or those from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown by the National Science Foundation to be underrepresented in the population, health, and spatial sciences on a national basis (see http://www.nsf.gov/statistics/wmpd); or 2) First generation college student (applicant's mother and father did not complete an undergraduate degree). The summer 2018 internship program provides a research and professional development framework for undergraduate students interested in population focused graduate training and careers. Interns will work a maximum of 35 hours per week (at $11 per hour ; ~$3,500 total at the completion of the program) for the nine week period May 29 - July 27, 2018. A conference allowance to attend and present at the 2018 Annual Meeting of the Southern Demographic Association (SDA) in Durham NC will be provided to interns who complete the CPC summer program and submit a paper for the SDA undergraduate paper competition (http://sda-demography.org/sda_undergrad_award.php). CPC interns work with faculty and staff on ongoing Center-based research projects that emphasize the intersection of the population, spatial, and health sciences. The internships provide an opportunity for students to participate in multidisciplinary research teams, develop a better understanding of the research process and what it entails, and prepare for the graduate school application process. Please see (https://www.cpc.unc.edu/training/interns/index.html) for titles of prior year summer research practicums. CPC is home to a diverse group of researchers, including faculty from sixteen UNC departments, postdoctoral scholars, and graduate student trainees. Research at CPC is interdisciplinary in nature, with a wide variety of fields represented, from sociology to nutrition, geography to epidemiology, anthropology to biostatistics, and more. For more information about CPC, visit the Center's website at (http://www.cpc.unc.edu/). |
