Under supervision, direct progressing to indirect, you will provide comprehensive prosthetic and orthotic care with the highest level of customer service. This includes assessing patients, formulating & implementing treatment plans, following-up with your patients and participating in practice management.

You will enjoy the ability of combining your unique blend of clinical and technical skills to evaluate patients, custom design, fabricate and fit prostheses and/or orthoses to deliver exceptional outcomes for the patients you serve. You will collaborate with other members of the rehabilitation team and innovate utilizing the latest technology as we all strive to empower human potential together.

The Clinician Resident is bound by the prevailing residency rules, regulations and standards set forth by NCOPE as well as the Code of Professional Responsibility from the American Board for Certification in Orthotics, Prosthetics and Pedorthics (ABC).

• Assessment of patients with impairment of human movement or musculoskeletal abnormalities that would impede their ability to participate in their social environment or other activities in order to determine a functional intervention. Patient assessment may include, but is not limited to, the evaluation of Anthropometric data, cognition, circulation, skin integrity, protective sensation, pain, central and peripheral nerve integrity, respiratory capacity, biomechanics, gait analysis including temporal and spatial assessment, range of motion, muscle strength, posture and balance, proprioception, orthotic and/or prosthetic requirements, myoelectric activity and potential, activities of daily living, environmental barriers including social, home, and work reintegration and the need for physical and occupational therapy modalities.
• Formulation of a treatment plan based upon a comprehensive assessment to design an intervention to alleviate limitations and enhance function. Orthotic and prosthetic treatment includes, but is not limited to verification of prescription/documentation, evaluation of the prescription rationale, a needs assessment based on patient and/or caregiver input, development of functional goals, analysis of structural and design requirements, assessment of potential physical and occupational therapy requirements and consultation with and/or referral to other health care professionals
• Demonstrates competency in understanding the growth and development of infant, child, adolescent and geriatric patients as measured by specific performance standards and as described by department/unit policies and procedures.
• Demonstrates the ability to interpret growth and development related information to ensure patient needs are met.
• Implementation of the orthotic and/or prosthetic treatment plan. Performs fitting, including static and dynamic alignments.
• Evaluates orthosis on patient and makes adjustments to ensure proper fit, function, cosmesis and quality of work.
• Instructs patients and family in orthosis use and care.
• Compliance with practice management plans to maintain patient records and progress notes, develop and document policies and procedures to ensure patient protection including evaluation of patient progress and maintenance of patient records, keeping current and up-to-date regarding new technology in the field of orthotics and utilization of Cerner to perform job duties as needed.

Practicum Responsibilities

• Presents two case presentations in the course of his/her one year cycle.
• Participate in the review of two peer journal articles.
• Responsible for completion of a "Resident Directed Study" to be approved by preceptor and the National Commission on Orthotic and Prosthetic Education (NCOPE).
• Responsible for maintaining a log of anonymous patient statistics for completion of quarterly and year-end NCOPE Residency Performance evaluation.

• Reports to Director, P & O Education
• Under direct supervision by Certified Orthotist during focused rotation.

• Analytical ability is required to gather information from patient evaluations and recommend solutions to technical and administrative problems
• Ability to handle high call volume professionally, striving towards first time resolution.
• Experience handling and expediting escalated issues with follow up to the customer.

• Must be self-motivated team player who demonstrates exceptional analytical and problem solving skills
• Ability to quickly assess situations, take appropriate actions and address customer needs timely and efficiently .

• Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate with patients and staff regarding fabrication of equipment.

• Normal patient care environment with exposure to dust, loud noises, offensive odors, and fumes.
• Some exposure to infectious diseases when working with patients.
• May include exposure to community, home, work, school and off-site clinic settings.

Required Credentials:

• Minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Orthotics & Prosthetics or Certificate in Orthotics from Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited college or university is required.
