Job Description

Silgan Containers, the largest metal food can producer in the United States, is seeking a Production Supervisor/Manager Trainee in our Fort Dodge, Iowa facility. In this role, you will learn the art of can making and acquire the skills necessary that will enable future success within our organization.

The Silgan Containers Management Trainee position and the Silgan Containers Production Management Development Program (PMDP) will train highly motivated & qualified individuals to assume Plant Supervisor or higher leadership roles within the organization. This entry level position requires solid technical & mechanical aptitudes, as well as the ability to communicate with all levels of the organization.

The candidate may be required to relocate at the end of the training program.

While the position will not initially have any direct reports, the qualified candidate will be required to learn, understand, and positively impact the five Key Plant Control Factors of Safety, Quality, Standard Operating Procedures, Employee Relations, and Operational Excellence:

  • Safety - Ensure an overall safe workplace through employee training, proper PPE usage, machine guarding and rule enforcement.
  • Quality - Apply SPC principles and basic quality tools (i.e. diagrams, flow/run/control charts, analysis, etc.) to solve issues and improve product quality.
  • Standard Operating Procedures - Lead the manufacturing team in using SOP's through employee training and consistent application.
  • Employee Relations - Mentor employees and direct work assignments through effective communication and cultivating a positive work environment.
  • Operational Excellence - Foster an environment conducive to continuous improvement and lean manufacturing by utilizing 5S and other tools.
Job Requirements

Experience and Education:

  • Must have a minimum of a High School or equivalent education. Trade school and/or technical school education beyond High School is a plus.
  • Skilled trades experience (machinist, millwright, tool and die, electrician) or engineering experience is highly desirable. We are seeking individuals with mechanical and technical skills/aptitude.
  • Prior experience in a production supervisory capacity is desirable.
  • The ability to relocate in the future may be required.
  • Proven leadership and influencing skills with effective communication and computer skills.
  • Working knowledge of current manufacturing techniques including lean, 5S, SPC, etc.

Physical Requirements:

Individuals must be able to work different shifts, weekends, and overtime. Limited travel required from time to time. Must be physically capable of walking, standing, lifting, flexing, bending, and climbing as necessary to carry out responsibilities. Individuals will spend the majority of the day (85% +) on the production floor in an environment that contains heat, cold, dust, noise, chemicals and high-speed manufacturing equipment.
